Making the most of the kitchen space you have is always a good idea, whether you have a small or large kitchen, especially the free space that can often be overlooked. In the kitchen, there is a lot involved! Pots, pans, utensils, herbs, books, food, tins, the list goes on. This may be the busiest room in the home, which means it is best kept well organised.
A good overall storage system is essential in the kitchen, and when designing your own kitchen, you have the opportunity to create one that works for you.
Hanging a simple rail with hooks in an area of free wall space is one of the most effective storage solutions for awkward cooking utensils, pots and even plants. It is flexible allowing you to add or take away from the rail, and it allows easy access and minimal fuss when cooking. Above the hob or sink (if you have all space above) is a good area for this.
Inside your cupboard doors is also another great place for extra storage that you may not have given any thought to before. Hanging plastic pots, containers or even basic stationary files is a brilliant way of organising items such as cleaning products. This keeps everything upright, orderly and easily accessible when you need it. It is also a great way of storing pot and pan lids, chopping boards and plastic containers. These awkward items can often get in the way or take up too much space.
Putting up several simple shelves in free wall space is a great way to free up worktop space. Shelves are not only the perfect place for your cooking books, but also for storing herbs and spices, jars, crockery, and depending on how much space you have, appliances such as your microwave. Alternatively, opt for built-in shelving within your kitchen design or include a bookshelf if you have the space. Shelving within a kitchen island is extremely effective for additional storage as well as a great design feature. Double up by creating shelving within your kitchen cupboards as a great way to maximise the kitchen space you have and keep everything well organised.
If you have the storage space, keep your appliances neatly stored away. This creates more space on the worktop and keeps your kitchen looking tidy. From ovens to wine coolers we have a huge range of appliances.
Most kitchens will have a fruit bowl or ‘junk’ area where things accumulate over time like pens, shopping lists, recipes etc. Make use of the ample ceiling space you have and hang some suspended baskets for fruit and any ‘odds and ends’ lying around. Notice boards are also essential for those loose pieces of paper laying around.
