The Dishwasher Buying Guide – Choosing the Appliances Perfect for Your Kitchen

The Right Dishwasher.

The Dishwasher Buying Guide offers some basic guidance on what to consider when thinking about purchasing a new dishwasher for your kitchen. There are so many different options, features and functions available on the market; it can often get confusing when choosing which model would be best for you.

When it comes to buying any appliance for your kitchen, it is always a good idea to do some research beforehand to familiarise yourself with what is out there, and most importantly to know what to look for in relation to your kitchen space and your needs.

The dishwasher is a valuable addition to any household, and much more cost and energy efficient than washing by hand. It is often perceived that dishwashers are not eco-friendly; however, they actually use less water than hand washing and most models offer a range of features and settings designed to conserve both water and energy, saving you time and money!

Firstly, there are two types of dishwashers, freestanding and integrated.

Freestanding models are unattached, allowing for complete flexibility when deciding on positioning. They are available in a range of colours to suit any style home, and are generally designed to fit perfectly underneath a standard height worktop. Most models will also offer a slim line or compact option.

Integrated dishwashers are fixed into the kitchen design, either fully concealed behind a matching cabinet door, or partially concealed whereby the door or control panel of the dishwasher is visible. As with freestanding models, integrated dishwashers are also available in a slim line version.

Once you have decided on the design, size and position of your dishwasher, there are several important factors to consider regarding the model.

When choosing your dishwasher you must firstly decide on the capacity you need. Dishwasher capacity is measured by the number of place settings, which refers to the number of plates and other eating utensils the machine can successfully wash. A full sized dishwasher is generally 60cm wide with a 12 place setting, whilst a slim line is 45cm wide with a 9 place setting. A 12 place setting would typically include;

  • 12 x 24cm dinner plates
  • 12 x 23cm soup plates
  • 12 x 18.5cm dessert plates
  • 12 tea cups and saucers
  • 12 tumblers
  • 12 knives, forks, soup spoons, teaspoons and dessertspoons

Baskets and Racks

Some models offer flexible baskets or adjustable racks, extremely useful if you occasionally need extra room for larger items such as baking trays or large casserole dishes. Flexibility inside the dishwasher is always something to consider ensuring that your dishwasher suits all your needs.

Washing and Drying

In addition to regular washing and drying cycles, most models will also offer a selection of extra cycles and options such as pre-rinse, quick wash, half load, auto-programming and economy, as well as additional drying functions. Extra dishwasher programmes make life easier and allow your dishwasher to be used in the most efficient way for your requirements.

Noise level is measured by decibels, ranging from 36dB to 54dB, and will always be displayed as a key feature. Dishwashers with a lower noise level are ideal for open plan kitchens or small living areas. Ideally, no one wants a noisy dishwasher, so always keep an eye out for the noise rating when comparing models.

Energy Rating

Finally and most importantly is energy efficiency. Energy grading for dishwashers range from the most efficient and economical A+++ through to D. Dishwashers actually use less water than hand washing as they filter and recycle the water used. Many models also offer a range of energy features and settings designed to conserve both water and energy, for example a time delay feature enabling you to set your wash at a specific time during the night to take advantage of cheaper electricity ratings.
