Renovating your kitchen? Here’s what you need to know

Renovating Your Kitchen?

There is plenty to take into consideration when you are planning on renovating your kitchen and it is important to make sure you are prepared. Depending on the extent of your renovation, there are three main stages in the process.

The Planning Stage

This is when you will start gathering ideas about the design and style you would like, in addition to planning your space and layout. Browse the internet for ideas and information. Pinterest is the ideal place to look at beautiful kitchens and keep up to date with current trends. Create your own board for inspiration – this really helps to visualise how you want your own space to look.

Once you have decided on designs, colours and finishes, nothing quite beats seeing it in the flesh. We recommend visiting a kitchen showroom in the planning stage. This will give you professional guidance and advice, as well as a clear idea of costs and timeframes. This is also the key time to think about exactly how you want your kitchen to flow. Kitchen design isn’t just about the aesthetic style, but as much about the structure and layout, to ensure your new kitchen works for you and your household’s lifestyle. During the planning stage you will also determine the scope of work and proposed budget. You will need to plan whether it is an upgrade in the existing space, if you need more room or perhaps you want to move your sink in which case your plans will include more structural changes and construction work so bear this in mind.

Depending on the extent of your renovation, whether you are having your whole kitchen done or part, there are ways to minimise disruption as much as possible. For example, creating a temporary kitchen area whilst your main kitchen is out of use, as well as making everyday essentials accessible and organised. Pack away everything you will not need throughout the duration to keep things tidy and organised, and cover areas in reach or doorways with dust sheets to prevent dust and dirt affecting the whole house.

During the Renovation

As with any major project, there is the possibility of it taking longer than expected or exceeding the proposed budget.  To put your mind at ease, prepare for unforeseen circumstances as much as possible. For example, be prepared to live from a makeshift kitchen for a while and embrace it. It may be difficult but it will be worth it in the end! Keep things tidy to try and avoid any unnecessary mess.
